One of the best things about gig rowing is that I’ve made a whole new set of friends since moving to Cornwall. Earlier in the year, the gig club held an auction of promises in aid of club coffers. My friend Sarah bid, and won, the top promise – a week’s sailing on Rampage, somewhere in the Greek Islands. She thought she was going to have a romantic week away with her fella, but he refused (he used to work on submarines and declared it his nightmare holiday, spending time on a boat and an even smaller aft-cabin). Sarah asked if I’d go instead. Never one to refuse the chance of an adventure, and a sailing one at that.

In August, Sarah and I set off for Kefalonia (from Cornwall, that’s a long way), and had the best week, forming deeper friendships in the process.

Duncan and Julia asked me to guest blog on their sailing blog, and here’s what I had to say, in ‘View from the guest cabin on Rampage.
